Raku Firings

Raku Firing Instructions (May)

Cost of Firing:

¼ shelf- $20

½ shelf- $30

¾ shelf- $40

Full shelf- $50

The shelf is a 14” octagon.

The deposit of $20 will go towards the cost of firing. All pieces will be paid for before the firing commences.

Minimum piece size 3”x3” and maximum piece size 10”x10”. If you have a piece that you’re not sure about, bring it by the shop or send us a picture and we can let you know if it’ll be too small or too big to pull out of the very hot kiln.

All pieces must be bisque fired. Clean bottoms.

Clay body recommendations would be a ^5/6 clay, grog helps but porcelain pieces do great as well. I can special order Raku clays by request but I have found our groggy clays we keep in stock work great.

As a standard each piece will be fired to 1830F, pulled and placed in a reduction atmospheric trash cans with plenty of newspaper to burn the carbon into the raw clay. Once it’s cooled for about 30 minutes they will be placed on a cooling rack or can be dunked in water to further the crackle.

There are many ways to finish a piece with the Raku process. We can accommodate those requests, such as airing the piece to enhance a crackle before placing it in the reduction cans or setting the piece aside for horse hair burning. Each piece will have instructions written down for us to follow and we will notify the artist when their piece is going into the kiln.

We’ll have a cleaning station set up for artists to clean the soot off and display after for our Art Walk viewers to “oooh and aaah”

Our Raku firings take place during Ashland First Friday Art Walks from 5-8 during wet months, outside of the fire season. However we will be starting these firings earlier in the day to get the kilns going. All artists need to arrive at 3:30 to price out their pieces and give written instructions. It’s best to stay for the full firing, but please communicate with us if you need to leave early.

Firings will be weather permitting and if we have to cancel, we will refund all artists' deposits.

Please stay clear of the firing zones and be respectful of the process RVPS has created for a safe and happy firing. We love providing this experience for potters and the community!

Only a deposit is required. We will follow up with you via email to get your piece into the firing schedule.
